Wasteland artisans. Part 1

Hello!

Crossout is not only about fierce battles in the post-apocalyptic Wasteland, but also about building your own unique combat vehicles. With a large number of parts, decorations, and factions, players can create different vehicles, armoured cars and battle walkers, from nimble buggies to mighty dreadnoughts. They can even draw inspiration from renowned fictional universes such as “Mad Max” or “Warhammer”.

But there are players among you who don’t stop at the virtual world. They make and print 3D models based on Crossout parts. Today we will show you some of these works. Moreover, this is only the first stage in our plan to work more closely with UGC (user-generated content).

To make the article more interesting and not just limited to beautiful pictures, we also interviewed the people who create the models.

Q: Who are you, and what pulled you into making Crossout models/prints?

A: This game had a huge impact on me for so long, I can't get enough of it. My first time playing it was magical, and still is, but after not being able to play for 4 years I struggle a lot.

Q: Favourite cabin/weapon/module to build and why?

A: Huge syndicate fan, I can’t stop analysing them in and out, both lore, cars, modifications, goals of theirs, literally so many things and references from the Initial D and Bosozoku and dekotera trucks, so goated in my option. But it’s Jannabi and Kaiju (never had it, but I like the weapon, I want to main it). Jannabi because of many things and simply I grew up loving JDM cars and tuning, well yeah after I returned and played a bit now even new players got better parts and weapons than me. Uhh, and my PS4 email is corrupted, so I can’t claim free things like Packs or so. I tried fixing it, but yeah, can’t do it, sadly. Can’t even have cartridges from twitch I collected.

Q: Which faction aesthetic do you like the most?

A: “One will common mind.”

Q: Your workflow in one line.

A: Experience, skill, desire.

Q: How do you go from in-game reference to a model (screenshots, measurements, block-out)?

A: Eh, I just take look at photo and copy it exactly the same, I know it in and out, plus I am “Lego” master builder.

Q: What software do you use? Any must-have plugins?

A: Studio 2.0 Bricklink software (hard to use but similar to blender).

Q: Where can people see your models/builds?

A: Uhh the Reddit usually, I will post more for sure soon.

Q: What’s next on your bench?

A: I need to make every possible model and buildable part in whole Crossout, so others can build what they like. I put so much quality and effort into my models and work for it, and I won’t stop.

Q: Who are you, and what pulled you into making Crossout models/prints?

A: I wanted something Crossout related irl.

Q: Favourite cabin/weapon/module to build and why?

A: Founders, it’s simple to recreate.

Q: Which faction aesthetic do you like the most?

A: Syndicate, I like cars.

Q: Your workflow in one line.

A: Just do it, do it good, so I don’t have to do it again.

Q: How do you go from in-game reference to a model (screenshots, measurements, block-out)?

A: All 6 sides to import into Solidworks with zoom ins of intricate details.

Q: What software do you use? Any must-have plugins?

A: Solidworks makers license, Cura slicer/Creality Cloud Slicer, blender for models with broken vertices.

Q: Biggest “aha!” tip you wish you knew earlier.

A: Models with movement like legs and guns are better printed on separate pieces that click together with no glue.

Q: Typical time/cost for a mid-size piece.

A: Per part (I did a lot of Founders armour) takes around 2 hours of modelling and 20 minutes to print. Sometimes I fuse parts into a solid model inside the slicer to make a singular object printing 30 parts as a solid piece, filling a buildplate with around 50 loose pieces is also an option.

Q: Where can people see your models/builds?

A: Just my username Xionite02 I use on every platform, I mainly post my work on thingiverse and my discord server.

Q: Advice for someone modelling/printing their first Crossout part this weekend.

A: Try to keep as much accuracy on scale, some parts in-game have a visually larger appearance than their hitbox/building pins, directly copying these dimensions will result in problems when glueing models together.

Q: What’s next on your bench?

A: The car named “DanzerExmachina” on the exhibition.

P.S. 3D-printing in action!

That’s all for now. See you in the next part, in which we will continue to learn about the most talented artisans of the Wasteland. Create wonders of engineering and good luck in battles!
